The primary good a society can extend to its members is the right to belong. Belonging or being fully human means more than having access. Belonging entails being respected at a basic level that includes the right to both contribute and make demands upon society and political institutions.
Given the time we are in now, when ultra-nationalism, xenophobia, hate, and racism continue to deepen and harden in the US and across the world, the need for intellectual and creative efforts that challenge Othering is more urgent than ever. As our political and social landscapes shift rapidly, we are steadfast in our commitment and work to actively resist the forces and policies of hate, isolation, and exclusion that we face in this exceptional historical moment.
The agenda for the 2017 Othering and Belonging Conference aims to respond to the urgent challenges of Othering that we face today. The confirmed speakers for the conference are critical thinkers, movement leaders, and changemakers who are unapologetically confronting deep exclusion and who are offering up solutions for institutions and societies based on inclusion, human dignity, and care for our living planet. You are encouraged to check the speakers page often as it will be updated frequently.
