About the Study Circles Online Conversation
The Disproportionality Technical Assistance Network, or “The Network,” is offering a unique opportunity for all participating school staff, equity teams, and partners to continue our personal and professional racial equity work, with a focus on the American Indian student experience... Join us in a Study Circles Online Conversation and the exploration the book, Everything You Wanted to Know about Indians But Were Afraid to Ask by Anton Treuer. Each session will use Dr. Treuer's book as a foundation for the conversation while exploring the impact of the opportunity gap on our American Indian students in the state of Wisconsin.
The Study Circles Online Conversation helps to address racial and ethnic barriers to student achievement and parent involvement by engaging diverse staff, parents, and partners in dialogue and problem-solving.
About the Book
What have you always wanted to know about Indians? Do you think you should already know the answers—or suspect that your questions may be offensive? In matter-of-fact responses to over 120 questions, both thoughtful and outrageous, modern and historical, Ojibwe scholar and cultural preservationist Anton Treuer gives a frank, funny, and sometimes personal tour of what's up with Indians, anyway.
—What is the real story of Thanksgiving?
—Why are tribal languages important?
—What do you think of that incident where people died in a sweat lodge?
White/Indian relations are often characterized by guilt and anger. Everything You Wanted to Know about Indians but Were Afraid to Ask cuts through the emotion and builds a foundation for true understanding and positive action.
Each Study Circles Online Conversation will consist of one 60-minute orientation session followed by three two-hour discussion sessions. These sessions will be a facilitated online conversation using the Zoom cloud video conferencing platform.

As a result of this Study Circles Online Conversation, participants will:
- have an opportunity to read and discuss the selected book with other participants from across Wisconsin
- engage in conversations with colleagues and explore multiple perspectives about American Indian studies
- address misconceptions and stereotypes of Native American peoples, communities, and nations

Fees and Registration
There are no fees to participate in this training, but pre-registration is required.
All participants will be provided with the book at no charge. Please register early so a book can be sent to you prior to the first session. ***Participation in the orientation session is a prerequisite to receiving the complimentary book from “The Network” for the session for which you registered.
